Say Goodbye to Wall Cracks: A DIY Handbook to Repair Structural Cracks

Say Goodbye to Wall Cracks: A DIY Handbook to Repair Structural Cracks

Structural cracks in walls, ceilings, or floors can be concerning, but addressing them need not always involve calling in a contractor. This DIY handbook aims to empower you to tackle small and thin cracks yourself, saving you time and money. However, for numerous or sizable cracks, consulting a professional is advisable for a thorough inspection (Click here to read how to identify the type of cracks on your wall).

1st step: Thoroughly clean the cracked surface and the area around it.
It is necessary to thoroughly clean the hairline crack in order to get rid of any dirt or stains. To ensure a good fixing, please remove any unwanted content in the cracks before adding the filling material.

2nd step: Moistening the cracks
Before applying filler material to the cracks on the wall or ceiling, please wet it with water for at least five hours.

Moistening this area will help you prevent the concrete from absorbing water from the applied grout.

3rd step: Get ready the sealant
Cement combined with water is the grout that is most frequently used to seal these cracks. Remember to add enough water to have a good grout mix.

Or you can use other filler material or sealant to fill out the cracks.
4th step: The application of sealant
Use the right tools, such as a pointing trowel or a putty knife, to fit the sealant to the cracks.

Remember to apply as much as possible to the cracks to ensure it fills the gap fully. Any excess content that comes off can be smoothed and levelled out to match the existing surface.

5th step: Hardening the cracks
The sealed cracks must dry for at least 2-3 hours and be covered with a board or plastic sheet for about 3-5 days.

6th step: Apply Paint
Once the sealant is completely dried, proceed with painting the repaired wall with elastomeric paint.

We recommend BAOMA Chameleon Primer 2000 here for structural cracks. This product is a high performance elastomeric water-based efflorescence & alkaline resistance primer for exterior & interior application on plastered wall, concrete, brick, gypsum board & etc.

There you have it. The process is simple. After a first or second try, you will get comfortable fixing these cracks on your wall, ceiling or floor.
